AG Mate Academy is a well established company created in 1993. It received accreditation in 1996 for the ELICOS course. The company has grown and currently has a student population of approximately 185 students from various nationalities. All office staff is multilingual and assists students with work permits opening bank accounts arranging accommodation and much more. THE PROGRAMMES General English allows students to arrive on either a student or tourist/working holiday visa and study either part time or full time. The course consists of six levels which are Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced. Students are also given 3 afternoon options to choose from. They are Communication Skills, IELTS/TOEIC Exam Preparation and Business English. EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is an intensive language course designed to equip overseas students with the necessary skills to study at tertiary level in Australian Universities and specialised colleges. In this course students will learn the skills to take part in a debate or discussion and present an extended seminar with facts, opinions, ideas and summary. For the listening aspect of English, the student will be able to listen to extended lectures, understand the difference between fact and opinion and take accurate notes. The student will be able to read a variety of text to obtain information, understand ideas and theories and write researched essays up to 3500 words in length. The teacher will use a multimedia approach using TV, video, radio, overhead projectors, audio cassettes and CD’s. During self study the student may use interactive CD-ROM’s or do research on the Internet. There is a strong focus on all aspects of English teaching. Listening, speaking and writing are the main areas emphasised. AG Mate Academy has made a direct articulation with TAFE NSW. TAFE NSW will accept AG Mate Academy’s’ EAP course as an English admission requirement into TAFE NSW courses. TEACHERS All teachers are native English speakers and are all trained professionals with TESOL qualifications as required for teaching English. METHODOLOGY The courses are student-centered and task-based using a multi-media approach with a variety of activities. AG Mate House is for students looking for a more independent living. Currently there are 3 houses available to students which are close to transport and shops. AG Mate House’s are ideally located and convenient for students. Hostel For a more autonomous student, AG Mate is able to arrange accommodation at conveniently located inner city hostels. EXAMINATION PREPARATION Students are given the opportunity to be specially prepared for internationally recognised exams such as IELTS and TOEIC exams. Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening exams are conducted under exam conditions. Test papers are also distributed to students to assist them in their preparation. CERTIFICATES AND AWARDS Upon satisfactory completion of the ELICOS and EAP courses, students are given 2 types pf certificates. One is a certificate of attendance and the other is a certificate of attainment. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS The college organises a number of social activities such as visits to Sydney Tower, the Opera House, The Rocks, Paintball, Harbour Cruises and trips to beaches such as Bondi, Watson’s Bay and Manly. Parties are also organised on a regular basis. This is great for students to meet one another. Students regularly go to Karaoke, the Hard Rock Café and can join the staff on Friday night’s at the nearby pubs. For those interested in sport Golf Days, Riding Bikes in Centennial Park and Volley Ball competitions can be organised. Staff can also book students on tours to the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley Wineries, Canberra and the snowfields. WORK EXPERIENCE AG Mate’s English and Work Experience has two parts: In class you learn the English and customs necessary to interact in the Australian workplace; you gain work experience in a company and use English, while being trained in a vocational skill. You must have sufficient English ability (Upper-Intermediate level or above) to take this programme. AG Mate is not only a school but is also a home.
